Emirates Issues UK Travel Advisory for UAE Passengers as New Digital Entry Rules Take Effect
Travellers flying from the UAE to the UK are being urged to double-check their travel documents after Emirates issued a formal advisory warning passengers about the UK’s new digital border entry system.
From early 2026, the UK will no longer rely solely on physical visas and passport stamps for many travellers. Instead, a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and eVisa system will be mandatory for millions of visitors — and passengers without the correct digital clearance could be denied boarding.
Emirates says it has already begun notifying customers, as the airline is required to verify passengers’ entry eligibility before allowing them to fly.
What has changed?
The UK is rolling out a fully digital immigration system that replaces traditional visa stickers and paper documents with online authorisations linked directly to a traveller’s passport.
Under the new rules:
-
Many travellers who previously entered the UK visa-free will now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
-
Visa holders will transition to digital eVisas
-
Border officers will rely on digital records instead of physical documents
This system is being introduced in phases and will be fully enforced from February 25, 2026.
From that date, airlines will be required to check digital clearance before boarding. If a passenger does not have a valid ETA or eVisa, they will not be allowed to travel.
Who needs an ETA?
The UK ETA is required for travellers who:
-
Do not normally need a visa for short stays
-
Are visiting the UK for tourism, business, or family visits
-
Are staying for up to six months
This includes citizens of many countries in the Middle East, Asia, and other regions who previously travelled visa-free.
The ETA is:
-
Applied for online
-
Digitally linked to your passport
-
Required even for short visits
-
Mandatory before travel
Without an approved ETA, passengers will be refused boarding at the airport.
What about travellers who already have a UK visa?
Travellers who already hold a UK visa will now be issued a digital eVisa instead of a physical visa sticker.
Your eVisa:
-
Is stored online
-
Is linked to your passport
-
Is checked electronically at the border
-
Replaces physical visa labels
Passengers must ensure:
-
Their passport is correctly linked to their eVisa
-
Their personal details are accurate in the UK immigration system
If your passport changes, your digital visa must be updated — otherwise you may face delays or denial of entry.
Why Emirates issued the advisory
Airlines are legally responsible for ensuring passengers meet entry requirements. If someone is flown without the correct documentation, the airline faces penalties and must return the passenger at its own cost.
That means Emirates will not allow passengers to board if:
-
Their ETA is missing or invalid
-
Their eVisa is not properly linked
-
Their passport details do not match immigration records
Emirates is advising passengers to:
-
Check if they need an ETA
-
Apply well in advance of travel
-
Confirm their digital immigration status before arriving at the airport
When should travellers apply?
Applications for ETA should be made well before travel, even if approval is usually quick. During peak travel seasons, delays are possible.
Travellers are advised to:
-
Apply as soon as flights are booked
-
Avoid waiting until the last minute
-
Keep a record of their approval confirmation
The ETA remains valid for multiple trips during its validity period, as long as the passport remains the same.
What happens if you arrive without an ETA?
If you arrive at the airport without the correct digital authorisation:
-
You may be denied boarding
-
You may miss your flight
-
You may have to rebook at your own cost
-
You may face travel delays
At UK immigration, entry will also be refused without valid digital clearance.
What this means for UAE travellers
The UK remains one of the most popular destinations for UAE residents — for tourism, education, business and family visits. But travel is now becoming more digitised, and paperwork is being replaced by online authorisations.
The message from Emirates and UK authorities is clear:
Check before you fly.
A valid passport alone will no longer be enough.
