How to Plan Your Travel and Leave Around UAE Public Holidays in 2026

Every year around this time, I do the same thing.
I open the calendar, look at the public holidays, and quietly think: Okay… how do I turn this into the maximum number of long breaks without burning all my annual leave?

2026 is actually a very good year for that — if you plan it right.

Some dates are confirmed, some are still predicted, but there’s already enough clarity to start thinking about long weekends, quick getaways, and when it’s worth saving leave days.

Here’s exactly how I’d plan my travel and time off in 2026, step by step.

January: Start the Year With a Reset

New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1

This one’s confirmed, and honestly, it’s a gift.

A Thursday public holiday means:

  • Take Friday off

  • You get a four-day break immediately

I wouldn’t overthink travel here. January flights are expensive, hotels are packed, and everyone’s already tired from December.

This is perfect for:

  • A staycation

  • A quiet road trip

  • Or just doing absolutely nothing (which is underrated)

March: The Big One Everyone Waits For – Eid Al Fitr

Predicted: March 20–22

This is where I’d start getting excited.

Eid Al Fitr usually delivers one of two things:

  • A neat long weekend

  • Or a longer break if dates align just right

I wouldn’t book flights yet — moon sighting matters — but I’d definitely:

  • Shortlist destinations

  • Track flight prices

  • Keep leave days flexible

This is a perfect international travel window before summer crowds kick in.

May: The Longest Break Opportunity of the Year

Predicted:

  • Arafat Day – May 26

  • Eid Al Adha – May 27–29

If predictions hold, this is where smart planning really pays off.

Here’s how I’d do it:

  • Take Monday and Tuesday off

  • Combine with the Eid break

  • Suddenly you’re looking at 9–10 days off

May is ideal for:

  • Europe (spring weather, fewer crowds)

  • East Asia

  • Long-haul trips you don’t want to rush

If I were booking one big holiday in 2026, this would be it.

June: A Small Break Before Summer Chaos

Predicted: Monday, June 15

A Monday holiday is always welcome.

I wouldn’t plan a massive trip here, but it’s great for:

  • A short regional escape

  • A wellness retreat

  • Visiting family without using leave

Think of this as a mental breather before summer heat really settles in.

August: A Sneaky Long Weekend

Predicted: Monday, August 24

August is tricky. It’s hot, flights can be pricey, and not everyone wants to travel.

But a Monday holiday means:

  • Easy long weekend

  • Zero leave days needed

This is where I’d:

  • Do a staycation

  • Head somewhere nearby

  • Or just use it to recharge mid-summer

Sometimes the best break is the one that costs nothing.

December: Ending the Year on a High

UAE National Day – December 2 & 3 (Wednesday & Thursday)

This one’s confirmed and always delivers.

Here’s my move:

  • Take Friday off

  • Combine with the weekend

  • Get five days with minimal effort

December weather is perfect in the UAE, so even staying local feels like a holiday. It’s also a great time for short international trips without the full Christmas rush.

My Personal Strategy for 2026

If I had to sum it up:

  • One big trip: May (Eid Al Adha)

  • One medium trip: March (Eid Al Fitr)

  • A few long weekends: January, June, August, December

  • Leave days used smartly, not emotionally

I’d avoid booking anything non-refundable until Islamic dates are officially confirmed, but I’d absolutely start planning now.

UAE Public Holidays 2026 – Quick Leave Planner

Period Holiday Strategy
January New Year Add 1 leave day = 4-day break
March Eid Al Fitr Medium international trip
May Eid Al Adha Long-haul holiday
June Islamic New Year Short regional break
August Prophet’s Birthday Free long weekend
December National Day Year-end getaway

Final Thought

The difference between a stressful year and a well-balanced one usually comes down to planning early and planning smart.

2026 gives us enough opportunities — you just need to see them on the calendar before everyone else does.

If you’re like me, half the joy is already in the planning.
